Are you drawn to the idea of walking among towering mountains, reaching summits over three thousand meters… but think you’re not ready?

The good news is that high-altitude trekking isn’t just for athletes. You don’t need to be a super-sporty person or have previous experience. What you do need is a progressive approach, good planning, and the right company.

In this article, I’ll tell you how to get started with high-altitude trekking—no myths, no magic formulas: just real, well-thought-out steps so you can enjoy the journey from the very beginning.

What is high-altitude trekking?

High-altitude trekking is a form of hiking that starts at around 3,000 meters above sea level and can reach summits of 5,000 or even 6,000 meters. At those altitudes, your body needs to adapt, and the experience becomes as much mental as it is physical.

But don’t worry—you don’t start there. Like everything in the mountains, it’s a process. And if you respect that process, anyone can progress safely.

Is it for you?

Many people think: “I’ll do it when I’m in shape.” The reality is, you don’t need to wait to be in shape to begin. Starting is what gets you in shape.

We’ve worked with people who had only ever done weekend hikes. With the right guidance, they’ve gone from their first three-thousanders in Spain to Himalayan base camps and beyond.

It all starts with one step. A well-guided one.

How to get started with high-altitude trekking

  1. Start with accessible routes

Places like the Picos de Europa or the Pyrenees have ideal routes to start hiking above 2,000 or 3,000 meters. You’ll learn on real terrain without overexposing yourself.

  2. Learn to acclimatize

At a certain altitude, walking isn’t enough. You need to respect acclimatization times, understand how your body reacts, and respond accordingly. This is a key part of our preparation process.

  3. Don’t go alone

Sharing the path with experienced people—and others who are also starting out—is essential. It motivates you, supports you, and helps you go further.

  4. Train body and mind

It’s not just about strong legs—it’s about mindset. We train with you so you arrive safe, prepared, and confident for any challenge.

From your first hikes... to great expeditions

We’ve guided people from their first steps on local trails to traverses through Nepal and ascents in India.

It’s not about collecting summits. It’s about growing with each step, with a progression tailored to you.

That’s why we don’t offer “pre-packaged” adventures, but guided experiences designed so you enjoy and learn—no matter your level.
