Welcome to La Porta del Cel — the 'Door to the Sky' — a legendary high-altitude circuit across the wild border between Catalonia and France. Defined by its verticality, the route crosses the highest peak in Catalonia (Pica d'Estats, 3,143 m) and visits the largest glacial lake in the Pyrenees (Certascan), deep in the heart of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. It is a demanding, technical and deeply rewarding adventure of long mineral stages, cross-border passes and remote stone refuges, closing back in the village of Tavascan with a final hotel night and gastronomic dinner. A trek-only option that ends on arrival in Tavascan is also available.

Prologue to the Graus refuge
Your journey begins with the ALSA bus from Barcelona to Llavorsí and a local connection to the remote village of Tavascan. Arriving in the afternoon, you set off on the 'prologue': an easy walk away from the village through lush, humid forest along the Tavascan river up to the Graus refuge (1,350 m) — a cosy mountain base to ready yourself for the high days ahead.
Certascan: the great glacial lake
The climb begins in earnest, heading up toward the Noarre valley and its traditional shepherd huts, frozen in time, before a steep ascent to the Certascan pass. The Certascan refuge (2,240 m) sits beside the largest natural glacial lake in the Pyrenees — deep blue water framed by granite peaks.
Cross-border to France: Refuge du Pinet
A wild, cross-border stage. Leave the Certascan basin and cross into France over the Col de Sellente, where the terrain turns rugged, mineral and remote. After a series of high ridges and alpine tarns you reach the Pinet refuge (2,240 m), a spectacular stone building on a rocky balcony above the French Ariège valleys.
The queen stage: Pica d'Estats
The queen stage, and the roof of Catalonia. Climb the technical path to the Pica d'Estats (3,143 m); from the summit cross, 360° views span the French and Spanish Pyrenees. A long, rocky descent leads down to the Vallferrera refuge (1,940 m), where a celebratory dinner awaits after the circuit's highest point.
Baborte & the Boldís valleys to Tavascan
A long but spectacular final mountain stage. Climb into the Baborte cirque, passing its high refuge and deep blue lakes, then descend through the hidden Boldís valleys — ancient forests and high pastures — back to Tavascan. The full experience ends with a gastronomic dinner and a comfortable hotel night in the village.
Tavascan & return to Barcelona
Breakfast and a slow morning in Tavascan, then the local connection back to the Llavorsí hub for the afternoon ALSA bus to Barcelona — the end of your 'Door to the Sky' adventure.

From Barcelona's Estació del Nord, take the ALSA bus up to Llavorsí (around 4–5 h), then a local connection on to the remote village of Tavascan where the walk begins. It's a long journey best started in the morning; we send the full timetables and connection guide with your roadbook.
By car it's roughly 5–6 h northwest from Barcelona via the C-13 and into the Vall de Cardós to Tavascan. Leave the car in the village for the week — the route is a loop that begins and ends in Tavascan.
Prefer not to rely on the bus? We can arrange a private transfer to and from Tavascan from Barcelona or the nearest station — just ask and we'll add it to your trip.

How booking works.
We authorize 20% on your card to lock your spot. Nothing is charged yet — the hold is only captured once your huts are confirmed.
A guide then calls every refuge and inn by hand to lock your nights, usually within 48h. Only when they're all confirmed do we capture the deposit. If one's full we propose alternative dates — and if nothing fits, the hold is released in full, never charged.
The remaining balance falls due 60 days before you set off. We send a reminder.

Once your huts are confirmed the deposit secures real logistics and is non-refundable — but in force majeure we rebook you onto alternate dates at minimal cost.
