Best Time to Hike the Pyrenees? There Are Three

There's no single best time to hike the Pyrenees — there are three. Pre-Pyrenees from May, mid-mountain from June, the 3,000m high country July to mid-September.

“When should I go to the Pyrenees?”

Every year, right about now, my inbox starts to fill up.

Summer’s over. Everyone’s back at their desk. And something quietly kicks in — they start dreaming about next year.

The question is almost always the same:

“When should I go to the Pyrenees?”

And most people already have the answer in their head. May. Spring. When the weather turns and the valleys go green.

Here’s the problem.

The Pyrenees they’re picturing — the high passes, the 3,000m ridgelines, the turquoise lakes above the treeline — don’t exist in May. Not yet. In May they’re still buried under a meter of snow.

The pre-Pyrenees open first

So let me lay it out plainly, because nobody really does:

  • The pre-Pyrenees open first. From May you can already be walking — lower routes, green valleys, and a season that runs long at both ends.
  • The Pyrenees proper, up to around 2,500m — routes like the Cavalls del Vent — come alive from June, or mid-June once the snow lets go.
  • The high ground — the big passes, the 3,000m peaks — you wait for. July. Sometimes mid-July. Go earlier and you’re not hiking anymore, you’re mountaineering, whether you planned to or not.

And then it shuts. The high season up there is short — it winds down from mid-September to the end of the month. The refuges close. The window’s gone.

The pre-Pyrenees, though? They keep going. Some of those routes are still walkable well into October.

There’s a “when” for the day you actually want

So here’s the real answer:

There isn’t one “when.” There’s a when for the kind of day you actually want.

If it’s the high, wild, above-the-clouds Pyrenees you’re after, you’re looking at a six-week window: July to mid-September. That’s the whole thing.

Which is exactly why the people writing me now, in September, are the smart ones. Not because they’re in a rush. Because the good weeks fill first, and the ones who plan in autumn get the days they actually wanted.

If you want to see which routes run when — and pick the one that matches the trip you’ve got in your head — they’re all here:

See you up there, Alberto

P.S. Everyone books the Pyrenees for August. August is the crowds. The ones who know go the first week of July, or the third week of September — same mountain, half the boots on the trail.
