Cancellation Policy
LAST_UPDATED · July 6, 2026
Because every trip is hand-built and we commit to refuges, hotels and transfers well ahead of your dates, cancellations carry real costs. This policy sets out exactly what happens if plans change — yours or ours.
1 · How payment works
You confirm a booking with a 20% deposit. The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure. Book within 60 days of departure and the full amount is payable up front.
2 · If you cancel
Cancellations take effect on the day we receive written notice at info@alturaexpeditions.com.
- More than 60 days before departure (before the balance is due): you forfeit the 20% deposit. Anything you’ve paid above the deposit is refunded in full.
- 60 days or fewer before departure: no refund is available, as by this point we have committed your accommodation, transfers and other arrangements with suppliers.
3 · Why the deposit is non-refundable
The deposit covers the route design, supplier reservations and planning work we carry out for you as soon as you book — work that has already been done by the time a cancellation reaches us.
4 · Changing your dates or transferring your place
Before the balance is due, we’ll do our best to move you to new dates subject to availability and any difference in supplier costs, rather than treat it as a cancellation. You may also transfer your booking to another suitable person at any time before departure, provided they accept our Terms & Conditions.
5 · If we cancel
It’s rare, but if we cancel your trip for reasons within our control we’ll offer you the choice of alternative dates or a full refund of everything you’ve paid us. We are not responsible for separate costs you may have incurred — such as flights or other travel — which is why travel insurance is required.
6 · Force majeure
We are not liable for cancellation, delay or changes caused by events beyond our reasonable control — including severe weather, natural events, fire, flood, avalanche risk, epidemic or pandemic, strikes, or government restrictions. In these cases we’ll help you re-book where we can, but refunds are not guaranteed and may depend on what our suppliers release. Your travel insurance should cover these situations.
7 · Weather and trail conditions
These are mountain trips, and ordinary bad weather is part of them — it does not, by itself, qualify for a refund. Where conditions make a stage genuinely unsafe, we’ll re-route or adjust the itinerary to keep you moving safely; this isn’t treated as a cancellation.
8 · Unused services
Once a trip has started, no refund is due for any portion you choose not to use — for example nights, transfers or stages you skip.
9 · Travel insurance
Travel insurance with cancellation and curtailment cover is mandatory for every participant. It is the right way to protect yourself against losses this policy cannot refund. See our Terms & Conditions for the full requirement.
10 · Refunds
Any refund due is paid to your original payment method, normally within 14 days of us confirming it.
