Kilimanjaro and Torres del Paine: I Won't Give You the Price

“Price?”

Every time I open self-guided routes in the Pyrenees, I send my list a summary of the options. Treks, ascents, different levels.

And every single time, without fail, the same messages come in.

“Price?”

One word. A question mark.

And I don’t give it to them.

Not because I’m hiding it. Not because there’s fine print. Not because it depends on the phase of the moon.

But because I have other questions first.

What exactly do you want to do? A trek or a summit? How many of you? What dates? Open group or private?

And the most important one of all:

Are you ready for that mountain?

Good.

It’s closer to a job interview

Think of it this way. This isn’t booking a hotel. This is closer to a job interview.

And in a job interview, both sides have to say yes. You have to want to go. And I have to be sure you can go.

Because the day you’re at 4,000 meters tying your boots with no air in your lungs, knees complaining, the group waiting on you, the price will be the last thing on your mind.

Only one thing will matter up there: whether you showed up prepared or not.

That’s why, before numbers, there’s a call.

A conversation where I give you everything. The itinerary, the logistics, the real preparation you’ll need. And yes, the price too. Right there. No mystery.

But after we both know it makes sense.
