The Three Refuges Trek, Two Hours From Barcelona

A seven-day loop in the eastern Pyrenees, two hours from Barcelona. Walk the valley floor or climb ten summits over 2,500 m — you choose each morning.

Two hours from Barcelona. Empty.

There’s a seven-day loop in the eastern Pyrenees, right on the border between Spain and France, that almost no foreigner has ever heard of.

Not because it’s hard to reach. It’s two hours from Barcelona. A train, then a little rack railway that climbs into the mountains, and you’re at the trailhead.

Not because it isn’t good. It’s one of the finest circular treks in the range.

It’s simply that the people who walk it are locals. Catalans. The odd French hiker coming over the ridge. That’s it.

We call it the Three Refuges.

You decide in the morning. Every morning.

And here’s the part I like most.

You can walk the whole thing along the valley floor. Three, three and a half hours a day, gentle, from one mountain refuge to the next. A holiday.

Or you can go up.

The route runs along the frontier ridge, and if you want it, you can bag up to ten summits over 2,500 metres. Bastiments, Puigmal, Gra de Fajol, the lot. The same seven days, turned into a serious mountain week.

And you decide in the morning. Every morning.

Same breakfast. Same refuge waiting for you that night. But over coffee, you choose whether today you stay low or you climb.

Right.

That’s the whole thing, if you think about it.

Because most people spend their lives on the valley floor, telling themselves that one day they’ll go up. And the morning never comes.

Here the morning comes every day for a week. And nobody is watching. No guide pushing you. No group to keep up with. Just a roadbook, a GPS track, and you.

Here’s how the seven days run

Day 1. Arrive in Queralbs, a stone village at 1,236 m. No walking. Settle in.

Day 2. Up through the Freser gorges to the Coma de Vaca refuge, 1,996 m. Three hours. Feeling strong? Add Balandrau, 2,584 m.

Day 3. Over the Coll de la Marrana to Ulldeter. A short day on the floor, or take the ridge over Bastiments, 2,881 m.

Day 4. Cross into France, down to the Ras de la Carança refuge.

Day 5. The big one. The three Carança lakes — Gran, Negre, and the impossibly blue Blau — and back over the pass. Nearly 13 km. The day you’ll remember.

Day 6. The Camí dels Enginyers, a balcony path carved into the mountainside, cables and all, down to the sanctuary of Núria. Or climb Puigmal, 2,910 m, on the way in.

Day 7. Down the old pilgrims’ path through the Núria gorges, back to Queralbs. Circle closed.

Fifty-two kilometres. Three mountain refuges. A border crossed and crossed back. And a ridge full of summits you can take or leave.

It’s self-guided, which is the point. We hand you the roadbook, the tracks with every variant marked, and a real person in English on the phone, 24/7, if anything goes sideways. The rest of the mountain is yours.

If you want to see the full route, the daily stages, and every summit variant, it’s all here:

Un abrazo, Alberto

P.S. The valley and the ridge finish at the same refuge every night. The only difference is the story you get to tell yourself on the way up.

Ready when you are

You move. We engineer the rest.

Tell us the objective. We'll come back the same day with a plan, the logistics, and a human who stays on the line the whole way.
